I base it primarily on airfare and cost of lodging and usually everything else falls into place. If I can get a good airfare deal for the 4 of us, that gives a bit of wiggle room in the budget. I usually look to maximize our travel budget. Sweden wasn’t really on the radar until I saw really good fares. So here we are! 🙂 Generally, I disregard school schedules as I figure the travel experience outweighs lost class time.

There are some really good tips here. One I would suggest is that taking out annual cover for multiple trips often doesn’t work out any more, or at least not much more, than a single trip cover. We go through Compare the Market and, as an example, I’ve just insured 10 of us (we have to do it in two lots as there are so many of us), for just under £70. That’s worldwide travel for multiple trips for up to 60 days at a time (because we travel for a couple of months at a time), for one adult and nine children between the ages of 17 and 3. We insured another three family members (1 adult and 2 children) for £18 (multiple trip cover, 60 day duration for each etc). Both insurers have 4 star defacto ratings which is reassuring also.
